However, the general advice is to use several beginnings and endings throughout the presentation by structuring the content well and changing the approach or activity periodically to keep the attention of the audience. Opportunities for this approach will be limited in a short presentation but the principles still apply and being aware of these techniques emphasizes the importance of having a clear structure.

The size of the audience will determine the appropriate level of eye contact but here are two important guidelines to follow, regardless of audience size. 1 Never hold one person’s gaze for more than five seconds maximum. 2 Never appear to be ‘watching tennis’, swinging your eyes (and head) from one side of the audience to the other. For presentation to small groups, fewer than about six people, focus on individuals in turn. For medium-sized audiences pick out individuals at random, drawing them into the presentation.
