In addition to not being allowed to testify in court, African Americans could not receive a public education, settle on public lands, or vote. Mason did not let any of those restrictions stop her from achieving her goals. In 1866, she became one of the first African American women to own land in Los Angeles. After saving for ten years, she paid $250 for two lots on Spring Street, which is now the center of the commercial district of Los Angeles. Mason lived at 331 Spring Street from 1866 to 1891.

Robert S. Abbott, the son of former slaves, was born in 1870 in Frederica, St. Simons Island, Georgia, to Thomas and Flora Butler Abbott. Thomas Abbott died of tuberculosis when Robert was one year old. Robert and his mother moved back to Savannah, where his mother met and soon married John Sengstacke. Robert was taught the value of hard work at an early age and began working as an errand boy at a grocery store. His mother required him to pay ten of the fifteen cents a week he earned for room and board.

Lewis was not just a businessman. He also was involved in organizations, such as the Masons, that helped to empower African Americans. The Masonic Temple was the focal point for the African American community’s commercial and fraternal activities. At the time, Masonic organizations provided insurance for African Americans, since insurance companies owned by whites would not cover them. While serving as treasurer for the Masons, Lewis developed special skills in managing money and learned the insurance business as well.
