Life was simpler then, so if you were told to arrive at a field just after sunrise, you knew more or less when to show up, although not everyone would get there at exactly the same time. Today we use mechanical or digital clocks to mark time and people still show up late. Our technology may change, but people seem to stay the same. CIRCUMPOLAR MOTIONS From some points on Earth, some stars appear never to set. Imagine standing at the North Pole, the exact point where Earth’s axis resides, the spot directly under the Pole Star.

But right now we don’t know for sure. Astronomers will make great efforts in the coming decades to answer this question. Whoever first confirms the existence of life elsewhere will be recorded in history books forever. It could be the last truly significant discovery in the field of astronomy. Finally, two appendices provide information about using a telescope and doing further work in astronomy. I hope that this book helps you understand astronomy; but more importantly, I hope it allows you a greater satisfaction when you look up at the night sky.

Because we are on Earth and it spins once each day, we move into and out of the Sun’s light, which is illuminating only half of Earth at any one time. As we look at the Moon, we see only one side, the side facing Earth, but the light from the Sun is fully illuminating one whole side. When the Moon is full, the side facing Earth is fully illuminated by the Sun. When it appears only half-illuminated (called a quarter phase), half of the side facing is illuminated and half is left in the dark. As the Moon orbits Earth, we see the fraction of the Moon’s side that is illuminated change over time, from full (completely illuminated) to new (completely dark) and back again through the crescent (partially illuminated), quarter (half-illuminated), and gibbous (mostly illuminated) phases.
