But insitutional rather than relation identity formation even for the jocks and thespians presumes a personal relational distance in favor of the apparatus, even when it is of ‘positive’ valence, ‘cranking up school spirit’ through good kid athletics. The rads are negatively linked to the apparatus, and further out on the perimeter, it is easier for them to articulate the derivative process of identity relation that I call ‘reified’ or ‘alienated’. The teachers don’t care you know, AND SO, neither do we.
Indeed, the identities that we observe are what I would call ‘reifications’, abstractions that blot out their ongoing interactional basis so that we see only an end result rather than the process of collective creation. The reason for that in this case is that the authentic, organic interactional process has broken down, and has been replaced by an institutional or rationalized, even mechanical, alternative mode of self production. Oftentimes, students and teachers recognize the interactional lack and derivative character of their relations.

I have gone through a lot of changes over the summer and the last few years, and I think if I had to do this (being a student leader) last year I’m not sure I would feel as confident about it.
