Bill had seemed to me quite intimidating with his formal bearing and business-like attitude, and I had been looking anxiously for something to soften that impression. The creation of the song “Tombstone Junction” opened my eyes. When Bill crafted that tune and played it with us, I saw his true personality. He wasn’t strictly business after all. He loved making music. Everything else he did was simply a means to that end. My faith in Bill and in his music remained firm. ” I had never asked Bill how much he paid his sidemen—I was so excited about just getting the job that I hadn’t even thought about the salary.

The first banjo player ever to be a member of the Blue Grass Boys, Stringbean often kept thousands of dollars in the pockets of his overalls, showing it to many people. In 1973 he and his wife were both killed by burglars in their home. Many people, including Bill, believed Stringbean’s death was the result of his lack of discretion in flashing large sums of money around in public. Bill’s actions didn’t seem to agree with his words, however. I often observed him showing off large denomination bills in public.
