The ground-school part of the course was provided by British Aerospace and Aerospatiale and both pilots underwent this process for six weeks while the flight engineer course lasted seven weeks.

This used flame detectors linked to a vent ignition suppression system, which automatically discharged extinguisher into the fuel system vent pipe, thereby preventing any ignited fuel vapour from blowing back into the system. Should fire break out in the vicinity of the fuel tanks there were four extinguishers; these could be operated manually from the flight deck by the crew, and should there be a cabin emergency involving smoke or fumes Concorde was fitted with two oxygen systems. Both function on low pressure, one for the passenger cabin and the other for the flight deck.

When Concorde was flying in autopilot mode its input was via two signal channels that integrated both the autopilot and flight director system feeds. In a similar manner to most autopilot systems, that fitted to Concorde operated in the roll, pitch and yaw axes. When engaged, the autopi lot operated a sequence of jacks which, in turn, impinged on mechanical linkages that overrode the pilots' control. In cruise mode, both flight directors were engaged, although only one autopilot channel was engaged, both became engaged for safety and back-up reasons during landing.
