We become preoccupied with its vision and even busy with its activities. And yet at the heart of the excitement and activity, there is hollowness because we neglect to put down our own roots. And then when personal trouble arrives, or the church hits a difficult and more barren patch (as all churches will do), then we find ourselves high and dry. Surely many people drift away from faith because they were never properly grounded in faith in the first place. When we consider how the Christian church, especially in the first four centuries, developed a process for “sound conversion,” we must be challenged by their rigorous plan and commitment to ground new believers in their Christian lives.
We must not blame the church or ourselves for the seductive work that temptation, tragically, can accomplish in us all. Sometimes the deceptive draw of the far country seems just too luscious to resist. But as big brother failed the wayward lad, so we too will fail our prodigals if we neglect to ask searching questions of ourselves, and assume that the only journey to be made is their journey back to us. We must be willing to travel the painful road of self-examination and ask what we could have done differently.

His kid brother became a prodigal and set out on a journey that would have been fraught with danger, and yet the older and hopefully wiser sibling didn’t lift a finger to stop it from happening. Big brother does nothing to prevent a parting. The prodigal walks. Look, he fades now into the distance. Most of us have prodigals in our lives, and how we would love to see them come home once again to God.
