To this extent the Gap Year can be seen as a resource for the accumulation of a particular type of ‘cosmopolitan capital’, where stories of travelling, volunteering, adventure and the consumption of exotic cuisine add worth to an individual’s biographical narrative. The issue of cosmopolitanism is also elaborated in our later discussions of music and consumption in Chapter 7.

At times online interactions spilled out into offline encounters as Goths passed on information to one another about Goth-friendly pubs, music venues and so on, serving only to ‘thicken’ their sense of subcultural attachment.
